Joslyn Art Museum Celebrates Art Works Opening
December 22, 2014 – In time for the Holiday season, Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha Nebraska celebrates the opening of its new 1,500 square-foot interactive space called Art Works. Designed by HDR, the newly renovated space draws visitors of all ages into a world of discovery housed in a fun, fresh and innovative environment. Once a dark and unused library storage area, the new center opens to a bright new world that invites creative expression, while also seamlessly blending with the surrounding spaces of this Art-Deco era museum.
Art meets fun in the colorful and eclectically-designed space with curved, fluid lines, no sharp edges and a dazzling display of light that includes the glowing, focal point light tower inspired by the Dale Chihuly glass sculpture in the museum’s entrance. Creativity stations feature custom-detailing and are designed and crafted to be visually appealing, flexible and durable, while also tying to exhibits and displays within the museum itself.
A gift from the Weitz family, each of the nine stations is named for family members and offers playful ways to create and experience art with light, color and shapes, such as Audrey’s Spectrum Sculpture, where the light-tower comes to life as visitors build interlocking art in a colorful array of bright acrylic shapes, Freddie’s Techno-Canvas where would-be artists can virtually paint, erase and repeat whatever inspires them on both wall and floor “canvases,” and Charlie’s Observation Station with opportunities to mimic native American bead works or create original designs on metal pillars with oversized beads.
